Hi, I’m Kassandra.
I am an artist based in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. I work primarily with ink to create abstract works greatly inspired the natural world.
My Art Journey
Though I’ve always created art in some capacity, my art career truly started in 2017, while I was backpacking in New Zealand. I started to create maps filled with words that represented the memories of each place that I travelled to. I called these my ‘memory maps’, and blissfully created several of them during my time there.
When I returned home to Vancouver, I continued creating these maps for myself and for others, expanding my offerings to include blueprints of peoples homes, and shortly after that I received my first commission.
From there my art evolved, much like we do as people, and I started to create abstract landscapes with ink that feel very therapeutic to make. I am very sentimental about the landscapes and places that have shaped me, and I felt like I was capturing those precious moments in time in my work.
I applied to, and attended, my first art show in 2018 in Vancouver, and shortly after moving to the Sea to Sky Corridor, I started to create and show my work regularly in Whistler, B.C where I have lived for the last 6 years.
My current work captures moments in nature through intuitive layers of ink. It is meant to transport you to a place, a time, a memory. Each piece is subjective to the viewer; what I see and am thinking of when I create the art piece could be completely different to where the art piece takes you, and that is the beautiful magic of abstract art.
Why do I create art?
I grew up in a very creative and vibrant household. My mother was an artist and crafter, and almost every day after school she would have something creative set up for us to do: gluing macaroni to a picture frame, clay, sketching, painting…I was so fortunate to grow up with art as a normal part of my day, alongside of spending many hours outdoors. My father was a musician and an all around creative entrepreneur who was always coming up with new ideas and would often follow through on creative curiosities. Marionette puppet shows, drum circles, jam nights...our home was filled with music making, art, and imaginative play.
Both of my parents passed away by the time I was 19, and though my world was turned upside down, I always felt supported by creativity. Making art is my way of connecting with pieces of my past, grounds me in the present, and open me up to dream about the future.
